Did you ever get to raid in World of Warcraft (WOW) using Ubuntu? I didn’t. Sure it runs fine with WINE – hey that rhymes! – but among the few things that was keeping me was Ventrilo. I’ve played WOW one too many times using Ubuntu. All of it were doing dailies, selling/buying items at the auction house, and running 5-man dungeons. I don’t consider the latter raiding. So I always had to reboot to Windows.
I shouldn’t have to tell you what Ventrilo is, but the countless players who just play the game for what it is – passing time and going after all those silly quests from baking cakes to randomly kissing avatars during Valentine’s Day (WOW has a name for this event that I can’t remember) – so for their sake this piece of software is for communicating to other people real-time while playing.
The real value of Ventrilo is during raids. The RL, or Raid Leader, gets to tell the raid group what do before, during and after Boss encounters. At the same time, raid members can tap a key (Ventrilo by default is PTT – push to talk) to cry for help, warn someone or add noise to all the shouting.
All that rebooting may soon come to an end. At least for Ubuntu/Linux users who are still playing WOW. How? With the use of Mangler. Fortunately, I quit the game a long time ago. However, too bad I missed this when I was still a heavy WOW gamer. This would have saved me countless reboot cycles.
Then again I’ve always wondered how Ubuntu, or Linux in general, handles a MMORPG game that is as massive as WOW and during raid times. Tried Regnum but I got bored quickly out of it. I’m not saying the game is all that bad. Having played WOW for 2 years it just didn’t feel right when playing another MMORPG.
Now enough of that ranting but on to the good stuff.
Mangler is an open source VOIP client capable of connecting to Ventrilo 3.x servers. It is capable of performing almost all standard user functionality found in a Windows Ventrilo client
Ventrilo works on WINE!
Sure it does. Does it? One more less software not to run through WINE I’d gladly take. WINE is great but I really prefer to run native apps on Ubuntu. Yeah, and in case WINE goes nuts while running both Ventrilo and WOW, do both apps crash or just one?
Now if I could just test this out. I can’t remember any of my old guilds’ Ventrilo servers. Where are those free ones when you need them?
If you are using Mangler or tried it out recently, do drop a comment below.
